County Overview

Hamilton County has 158,336 real property parcels – 8.72% (13,811 parcels) in the industrial and commercial sector, 89.99% (142,478 parcels) in residential and farm, and 1.31% (2,047) in greenbelt parcels.

Hamilton County is known for its natural beauty, history and cultural attractions – including being the birthplace of moon pies and the locale for the Chattanooga Choo Choo, made famous by the Glen Miller Orchestra. From the top of Lookout Mountain, residents and visitors can see seven states. Home to the city of Chattanooga, along with East Ridge, Collegedale, Red Bank, Soddy Daisy and Signal Mountain, Hamilton County is on a four-year revaluation cycle with 2025 as the next revaluation year. The County’s tax rate is $2.2373. Each municipality also has an additional tax which is blended with County tax rates.  For example, Chattanooga’s municipal tax rate is $2.2500, making its property owners’ combined rate $4.4873 ($2.2373 + $2.2500).

The 2025 property value revaluation period is particularly important for industrial and commercial property owners in Hamilton County. Hamilton’s industrial/commercial parcel owners make up only 8.72% of all parcel owners in the county, but for the 2023 tax year, they represented 35% of the county’s estimated assessment values and 35% of the total tax burden.
